"Principal" Cheeks and players take over school on October 16

Head Coach Maurice Cheeks to act as principal when team heads back to school to assist in the classroom

Philadelphia, Pa. – October 14, 2008 – As a finale to the Philadelphia 76ers “Rule the School” essay contest, which asked students to submit entries explaining what made them the biggest Sixers fan, the team’s players and coaches will pass out assists in the classroom on Thursday, October 16 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. when they lend a hand to teachers at Haverford Middle School located at 1701 Darby Road, Haverford PA, 19083.

Thirteen-year-old Chipper Rossino won this opportunity for his school after submitting his essay via SIXERS.COM.

The takeover will begin with a Sixers Pep Rally led by Sixers Radio play-by-play announcer Tom McGinnis and will include special appearances by Hip-Hop, Hare Raisers, Sixers Dancers and a full team introduction to the school. The players and coaching staff will assist teachers by participating in the lesson plan for the day and then join students during 6th period classes, based on subjects the players found most interesting in school.

"Each season, we try to think of new ways for our players and coaches to impact our young fans,” said Senior Vice President of Business Operations Lara Price. “By creating the opportunity for our players to go into a local school and interact with students in subjects they enjoyed as kids, their enthusiasm will hopefully inspire a similar excitement towards education."
