Jrue Holiday Teleconference 7/9/09
On how he feels he’s played in the first 3 games of summer league…
I think I’ve done alright. I think I’m getting better every game, which is definitely my goal and the goal of the coaches.
On how his defense has been…
I’ve been playing great defense. I’ve been trying to give energy to the team on the defensive end and get deflections, which is big for a point guard.
On who has been running the point…
I’ve been on the ball the whole time, running point guard.
On the unfamiliarity of playing new players…
You definitely still have to look at the scoreboard; we’re all still trying to win. Not only win, but come together here as a joint team. We’re all good players and we have a drive to win.
On what the difference between now and the regular season will be like…
I really have no clue. I think the competition is going to be better and a lot harder. The guys you’re playing here aren’t the All-Star level guys that you have to guard every night in the regular season. I think the competition is definitely going to be better.
On defense being his main focus…
Most definitely. That’s just kind of in my DNA. You can have a bad offensive day, but if you play good defense you can help trigger the offense. I always try to pick up the team on defense. For the point guard, it all starts with going hard on defense.
On looking forward to a bigger role if Andre Miller does not return…
Yes, definitely. If Andre Miller stays I’m going to learn from him because he is a great player, he’s smart, and he knows the game.
On what has presented him with the most challenges offensively…
Putting pressure on the defense. I haven’t really been too aggressive offensively except for parts of the last game. I’ve really been trying to fill up the game. I’ve been talking to the coaches after every game.
On his early approach to these games…
I’ve been trying to bring balance to the court. Playing with wings like Chris Douglas-Roberts and Terrence Williams, I’ve been trying to pass more than look for my own shot. I’m trying to be more aggressive offensively. I’m trying to run through the players every time where I have to read the situation and make a play.
On going head to head with Eric Maynor…
I think I did alright. We’ve played with each other before, recently in workouts, and it’s a fun match up. I really like his game.
On what he takes away from summer league…
Just to become a better player, and be a student of the game. There are a lot of things I have to learn, and there are a lot of things I have to be taught. You really have to pack things in here.
