The 2011-12 season marks David Courtney’s fourth season as the Public Address Announcer of the Los Angeles Clippers. He joined Clipper Nation in 2008 after serving as the team’s back-up announcer for the previous three seasons.
David is a well-established voice in the Southern California sports community, having also served as the P.A. Announcer of the Los Angeles Kings for 23 seasons and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for 18 years. He was also the announcer for the Los Angeles Rams in their final four seasons before the team moved to St. Louis. With the Clippers, Kings and Angels, it's the second time he has been the voice of three major league teams at the same time.
Announcing the Clippers also marks the second time that he has been the regular announcer for an NBA team as he called the games of the Houston Rockets in the early-to-mid 80’s.
He has the unique -- and possibly singular -- distinction of being the voice of three major league sports All-Star Events (2002 NHL, 2010 MLB & 2011 NBA) and Championship Series’ (1981 NBA Finals, 1993 Stanley Cup & 2002 World Series).
Born in New York City, Courtney and family moved to Los Angeles 1963 when his father, Alan, a network television executive, became President of MGM Television.
He began working in professional sports in when he was 14-years old, starting as a P.R. Assistant for the Kings in 1971. Under the guidance of legendary P.A. announcer, John Ramsay, and by doing games for his Beverly Hills High School varsity football and basketball teams, he learned the craft well enough to become Ramsay's back-up for both the Kings and the Lakers.
In 1978 he left L.A. to take a full-time job as P.R. Director of the Houston Aeros in the World Hockey Association. When the team folded a year later, he remained in Houston and began a successful broadcasting career in both radio and television and found himself in demand as a P.A. announcer; eventually handling the Rockets, USFL Gamblers and sharing the Houston Astros.
Over his career, Courtney has announced sporting events for over 30 different teams or organizations and has announced at least one or more games for the Lakers, Dodgers, Raiders, USC football, UCLA basketball and become the voice of the Pac-12 Men’s basketball tournament.
His work as an announcer has also led to voice roles in the movies "Tooth Fairy," “Angels in the Outfield” and “61*” and television's “Home Improvement.”
Since 1992 -- in addition to his sports announcing -- David has worked full-time in Southern California radio as a traffic, news or sports reporter. He is currently heard daily on KABC (AM 790) and KLAA (AM 830) in Los Angeles and KOLA (FM 99.9) in the Inland Empire.
David, 55, and his wife, Janet Fisher-Courtney, reside in Mission Viejo.
