Groundbreaking, story-breaking career helps Vecsey to spot

Using a unique voice and an uncanny ability to get the story behind the story, Peter Vecsey has been chronicling the game of basketball for the New York Post since 1977. Vecsey is nationally known for his informative and biting style in his thrice-weekly "Hoop Du Jour" column. Vecsey also graced the pages of USA Today from 1990 to 1993 before returning to his New York roots at the Post.

Vecsey is no stranger to the television screen, either, becoming one of the first print reporters to take a dive into the world of sports TV. He worked as an NBA Insider on the Emmy-award winning Inside The NBA on TNT and on NBC Sports' NBA Showtime, where he regularly broke stories and provided insight. During the 1987-88 season, he hosted a syndicated television show with former Knicks coach Hubie Brown. Vecsey also hosted a one hour NBA talk show on SportsChannel New York in 1985 and 1986.

Vecsey has never been one to back down from the criticism of a player or coach, be it Larry Brown (Vecsey called the notoriously nomadic coach "Next Town Brown") or Danny Ainge ("Danny Ain't").

Reporters, teams and players feared and respected the words of Vecsey because he often reported basketball's untold tales and broke news before it became rumor. In an article from AOL's NBA Fanhouse, Matt Steinmetz had this to say about Vecsey's stealth reporting skills: "Vecsey seemed to have tons of sources and his stories were usually filled with tidbits and nuggets of information that you either had to acknowledge or follow up on. There was nothing worse than hearing from your editor: 'You see what Vecsey had in the Post today?'"

Vecsey is the younger brother of New York Times sports columnist George Vecsey. His son, Taylor K. Vecsey, also writes for the East Hampton Star and New York Post.
